L'Esterel via the “Corniche d'Or”

On this post card from the 1950s, the road seems to be hanging in a void, a grey asphalt furrow overlooking an ocean of blue. The red, vertical rock face of l’Estérel represents an unassailable mineral frontier. In the background, the 482 metre-high peak of Cap Roux.

Harsh, untamed wilderness

Nothing has changed on this N98, quite opportunely dubbed the “Corniche d’Or” (“Golden Ledge”) that you can take on leaving Saint Raphaël to reach Cannes. This coastal route snakes through a grandiose landscape at the foot of l’Estérel, passing sublime viewpoints and tourist villages such as Agay, the “ruby of the Cote d’Azur”, nestled in one of its most beautiful harbours, just 10 kilometres from “Saint Raph”.
Col de Belle Barbe, Mal Infernet ravine, the Lac de l’Ecureuil, the summit of Pic de l’Ours… until the 19th century, the officially listed Estérel nature reserve remained unexplored. Today it is yours to discover!
