While, thanks to Cezanne and Pissarro, the name of Pontoise has been inextricably attached to the Impressionist movement, this charming, little city has had other “press agents” as well. When Saint Louis chose it as his residence, poet Francois Villon was quick to write “Paris, near Pontoise” to help people locate the capital of the kingdom!
At the beginning of the 14th century, Pontoise was a prosperous royal city, the main agricultural market in the Vexin region, an important center for crafts and one of the largest cities in France.
The 100 Years War, and subsequent epidemics of the plague dimmed its light, and Pontoise “went to sleep”. However, it was here that Louis XIV found refuge with his mother, Anne of Austria, during the events of the “Fronde” (civil war), in 1652. It is also here that the Parliament of Paris was held three times. Later the railway and the painters came here and sealed the renewal of the city.
