The most beautiful park in Paris

The people who say that Buttes Chaumont is the most beautiful park in Paris may be a little biased, but a simple visit will be sufficient to convince you they’re right. Built on the orders of Napoleon III, the “Buttes” were intended to serve as the eastern counterpart to the Bois de Boulogne which, in the 1860s, was a key attraction for the western side of Paris. And it was to be the same team, made up of architect Davioud, the engineer Alphand and the landscaper, Barillet-Deschamps, two ex-colleagues of Napoleon’s prefect, Haussman, who would direct the works in each of the parks.

4 years in construction

The Buttes site was one of Pharaoh-like proportions: 4 years and 1,000 workers would be necessary to transform what had once been quarries into a superb, English-style park with cliffs, a folly in the form of a Greek-Roman temple, caves and waterfalls, full of fragrant trees and splendid floral displays. 140 years later its lawns still serve as the venue for soothing siestas taken by stressed-out Parisians.

Good to know :
