Saint-Augustin, Malesherbes, Madeleine

For starters, a set of steps lead you to Rue Portalis. At the end of the street, Place Saint-Augustin proudly presents the church with the steel dome designed by Baltard. Just across the way lies Boulevard Malesherbes, which takes you to La Madeleine and beyond, to Rue Royale. To your left, the stunning Boulevard Haussmann offers a peek at the fabulous Printemps and Galeries Lafayette department stores.

Turning your back to the River Seine, you’re but a fifteen-minute walk from the stunning avenues of Parc Monceau and two intriguing museums: Nissim-de-Camondo, the first of the sumptuous mansions on the Emile Pereire estate, and Cernuschi, which offers an initiation into the traditions and beauty of Far Eastern art. Heading back up Rue du Rocher towards the 17th arrondissement, the typically Parisian stores on Rue de Levis are just ten-minutes further on foot. A small pedestrian street, it nevertheless serves as home to a permanent fruit and vegetable market and terraces where you’re welcome to soak up the sun while sipping un café.

• Stroll as you like through the streets to the north of Parc Monceau and feast your eyes on the exquisite private mansions. Whether Neo Gothic-styled, of Flemish inspiration or redolent of the Italian Renaissance, for lovers of fine architecture, all offer a walk that mirrors the history of France.
