“City of light”, a rebel city, a port of call for the Orient … leaving aside the descriptions that it has always fully deserved, a mere stroll - as the tourist guides will tell you – is sufficient to convince you that
this is one of the most beautiful cities in France.
A capital city!
“La Cité Phocéenne”, site of
ambitious redevelopment projects, including the iconic
Euroméditerranée, which is now starting to rise from the ground. Marseille is a capital city, even if it long ago relinquished its ultramarine empire. Because
“no one will ever be able to take away from it its sheen, its ambition, its soul of a major city”, gushed Christian Makarian in an article in l’Express magazine published in September 2007.
But there’s also a natural side to life lived in Marseille, that of the
Massif des Calanques, an
exceptional site that links it to Cassis, and the
picturesque Garlaban massif, so beloved by the writer Pagnol.
Yes, this is truly one of the most beautiful cities in the Mediterranean basin…
