The history of Rue du DragonCalled Rue du Sépulcre until 1808 after the canons of the church of Saint-Sépulcre, who owned property there, it was renamed after the revolution at the request of the residents, unhappy with such a gloomy name. Its closeness to Cour du Dragon earned it the name it bears today.
Victor Hugo lived here
Is this the dragon that, in French legend, killed Saint Michel? Although that’s open to debate, it is true that the street has been home to a number of famous writers, such as Victor Hugo, the Nobel Prize winner Roger Martin du Gard and Jacques Copeau, founder of the Vieux Colombier Theater. Legend has it, that it was also home to the ceramicist Bernard Palissy, who spent 16 years of his life cracking the secret of enamel, and to whom the residence pays tribute.
The 14th century saw the construction at 1 Rue du Dragon of the mansion (which at that time extended al the way to Rue de Rennes) belonging to the Taranne family, a dynasty of finance ministers to kings Charles VI, Charles VII and Louis XI.
